Social Media Optimization (SMO) or Social SEO is the unique method of social media activity with the intent of getting unique targeted traffic to your website content. SMO is one of two online methods of website marketing; the other method is search engine optimization or SEO.

There are two categories of SMO/Social SEO methods:

  • (a) Social media features can be added to the content itself, which can include: RSS feeds, social news and button sharing, user rating and polling tools, and also methods for incorporating third-party community functions like sharing images and videos.

  • (b) Promotional activities in social media in addition to the content getting promoted, may include: blogging, leaving comments on other blogs, participating in discussion groups, and posting status improvements on social networking profiles

Social Media Optimization is related to search engine marketing techniques, but differs in many ways, primarily the main focus on getting visitors or traffic from sources other than search engines like google, though improved search ranking is another benefit of successful SMO.

Social Media Optimization is in lots of ways connected as a method to viral marketing where word of mouth is created not necessarily by using friends or family but through the use of networking in social bookmarking, video and photo sharing websites. In a similar fashion the involvement with blogs achieves is similar by sharing content by using Rss feed in the blogosphere and special blog search engines.

Social Media Optimization is recognized as an important part of the online reputation management (ORM) or Search Engine Reputation Management (SERM) technique for organizations or individuals who care about their online presence.

Social Media Optimization (SMO), is absolutely not limited to marketing and brand building. Even more businesses are getting smarter by integrating social media participation as part of their knowledge management strategy (ie. product/service improvement, recruiting, employee engagement and turnover, brand building, customer satisfaction and relationships, business development and more). Furthermore, Social Media Optimization is quite often implemented to foster a community of the associated site, allowing for a healthy business to consumer relationship.
